How does your work ensure that good digital citizens contribute responsibility to the digital world?

To start the year, I always go over digital citizenship and what a digital footprint is with my students. I think this is something important to touch upon since high schoolers have smartphones and the internet always at their fingertips. Being aware of the content they post and who they interact with seems like common sense, but it’s important to reiterate when teaching such a plugged in generation.

     In my Computer Art class, every student has a different style when they create art. Some are just exploring my elective for the first time and some already have a strong background in computer art. When we work, students must be respectful of what other students are creating. I have a “no negativity” policy that I have posted in my Philosophy of Education that is hanging up in my classroom.  I also always encourage students to create original work. They can use sources as inspiration, but I want everything they create to be uniquely theirs. I also don’t allow my students to create or use any images that have guns, weapons, or depict violence which is surprisingly harder than it seems. Although I never want to thwart any creative ideas, these policies have helped me maintain a space where students feel safe to express themselves and can freely create without judgement.
